Assistant Surgeon Alfred D. Wilson, was born near Englishtown, Monmouth County, New Jersey, July 1, 1839. He received the degree of M.D. from the New York University Medical College in March, 1863. April 29th of the same year he was appointed assistant surgeon of the 3d New York Light Artillery, with which he served in North Carolina throughout the war. He was promoted to be surgeon of his regiment June 18, 1861, and March 31, 1865, appointed surgeon in chief of the defenses of Newbern. He was mustered out of service July 15, 1865. Dr. Wilson passed the following winter in New York in improving his medical knowledge, and in the summer of 1866 he opened an office at Elizabeth Port, New Jersey, with the intention of engaging in the practice of medicine. From this he was called away by the illness of his father, and subsequently resolved to apply for admission to the medical staff of the army. Having passed the board in December, 1866, he received a contract as acting assistant surgeon, and, May 14th, 1867, was appointed assistant surgeon. He served at various posts in Kansas, Nebraska, Utah, and Wyoming Territory till July, 1872; then as post surgeon, Fort Warren, Boston Harbor, till March, 1874. In the latter part of the same year he accompanied a detachment of troops to the Pacific coast, where he served as post surgeon at Fort Yuma, California, till April, 1875, and subsequently at Camp McDowell, Arizona Territory, until the time of his death. He died November 30, 1875, of dropsy from hepatic disease.
