Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Black-and-white photographic portrait of Dr. John 'Jack' Shackelford, born in Richmond, Virginia, in 1790, and later a surgeon and cotton planter in Alabama, where he served in the Alabama State Legislature and in the State Senate. He later organized and financed the Alabama 'Red Rovers' to fight in the Texas Revolution. Most of a company (all but eight) of 'Red Rovers' (also called 'Shackelford Reds') were massacred at the Goliad massacre by Mexican troops by order of General Santa Anna at Goliad, Texas. Capt. 'Jack' Shackelford's son Fortunatus was among those massacred, but the father was spared to attend to the enemy wounded. Shackelford County, Texas, was later named for him. Shackelford died in Courtland, Ala., in 1857. This photograph likely dates from about 1845-1850. Photographer unknown. Image courtesy of Wallace L.
