Passing the usual dumped bags. At the corner of Dowsett and Parkhurst Roads, someone had also left a computer monitor. Original Message ----- From : Cllr Alan Stanton To : Haringey Urban Environment Sent : Tuesday, June 24, 2008 4:26 PM Please see the photo I've posted on Flickr. This [location] has now become a site for regular dumping of domestic waste, green waste, and other garbage. You may think it shows a small insignificant example from one street. It is not. It's part of what I've described as a parallel waste collection system. As in hundreds of locations across Haringey, the dumping here is stuff which the Council / Haringey Enterprise expects to collect from people's homes - for free. But it's now obvious to all residents that we also collect it when a small minority choose to dump: in the street; or down some alley; maybe on a railway embankment; or on a small piece of 'green'. In fact, anywhere except in a wheelie bin; or a green box; or a Recycling Centre; or 'bring' site. This undermines and makes a mockery of the Council's wider messages about "Better Haringey", Recycling and the "Greenest Borough". Instead, we are legitimating and rewarding the antisocial dumping behaviour of a small minority. It provides a misleading example for people newly-arrived in Haringey. Perhaps more worryingly, it "models" poor behaviour for children and young people - ensuring that the cycle continues. |
