Snow enough had fallen at Christ-mas time to fill up every inequality inthe countryside, chock to the brim. All thescrub woods and bushes had disappeared,and every troublesome snag had long agosunk out of sight under the generous whitemantle of winter. A sudden thaw for a singlenight late in January had put a perfect sur-face on the snow which was already wellpacked down by norwesterly gales. We had been enjoying a long three daysdrive with our dogs through the finest partof the country, over the high white hills,crossing the frozen bays on the ice from onewooded island to another, threading our wayalong the paths cut through the spruce forests,and sweeping down the courses of rivers ata pace that made it no easy matter to avoidthe unfrozen rattles and rapids, as the dogstore along the trail like a pack of hounds in172
