Parked on the bow are Douglas A4D-2 Skyhawks (BuNo 142418, 142137, 142134) of Attack Squadron 83 (VA-83) "Rampagers". VA-83 was assigned to Air Task Group 201 (ATG-201) aboard the Essex for a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Western Pacific from 2 February to 17 November 1958.
