And the military necessity of this mix of upside down and rightside up is... landing in Austraila?? My own theory, strictly mine, is that the requisite one Marine aviator in any given Blue Angels team looked the other pilots right in the eyes and said, "Sure, but that's not really hard enough. What would be tougher to fly?" This is what they came up with.

Which is why the Blue Angels are the tightest, most committed looking, most graceful and most impressive of all the air show teams. Sorry USAF Thunderbirds, you make 2nd, at best. I've seen both groups. The difference isn't subtle. 

Rescanned at 1200 dots per inch, color saturation turned up, you can clearly see all 4 tail numbers, I'm pretty happy with this.
