Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen on a November 2021 evening from the Hamburg Street viaduct in Buffalo, New York: the rear face of the brick industrial building at 567 Exchange Street sports a nearly-illegible pair of early-20th century ghost signs, one overlaid on top of the other. A history of the building brings their identities to light: the older of the two reads "BUFFALO LOUNGE CO." (top) and "HIGH-GRADE UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE" at the bottom. Specialists in the manufacture of rocking chairs, couches, and fold-out beds, Buffalo Lounge was founded around 1899 and operated out of a factory on Louisiana Street before moving to this larger facility in 1901, which they occupied until they went out of business during the Great Depression. In 1934, the building was sold to the Craver-Dickinson Seed Company, whence the overlaid newer advertisement: "CRAVER-DICKINSON SEED CO." (top) and "POPCORN - FARM SEEDS - LAWN GRASS" (bottom). Records show Craver-Dickinson was in business at least through the mid-1960s. The building now contains space for a variety of industrial and office tenants.
