Title |
Double loop sub-annular buckle. Front view. |
||
Description |
English: A complete, Post Medieval Mid 17th Century - 18th Century, cast, copper alloy, small double loop, sub-annular buckle. The buckle has a rounded front surface, a very narrow central strap bar and a flat back surface. A number of these buckles have been recovered which are fitted with a folded sheet metal attachment plate, pierced at the far end to take a single upstanding stud, this suggests that many were used a shoe buckles after they came into fashion in c.1660 and therefore are contemporary with the 'new style' two-piece buckles. The buckle has little wear and an attractive dark brown even patina and it is very slightly distorted. This buckle is likely to date to 1650-1720AD. Ref. Buckles 1250-1800, Ross Whitehead, Greenlight Publishing 1996, page 48-49 No. 278 & 283. The buckle is 19.08mm long, 16.35mm wide, 2.04mm thick and weighs 1.1g. |
