Title |
Double loop spectacle buckle fragment |
||
Description |
English: Part of a cast copper alloy double loop spectacle buckle. The outer edge of the remaining loop has a moulded knop, the frame is otherwise undecorated, and the strap bar is narrowed. Ross Whitehead (Buckles 1250-1800, pp.52-61) considers this type difficult to closely date, as they appear in contexts from 1350-1720. However, examples with moulded decoration on the loops are most common in mid 16th-mid 17th Century context.
Half of the buckle and the pin are missing, otherwise the buckle is in good condition with a stable dark patina. |
