Title
Double headed spout from below
Description
English: Cast copper alloy zoomorphic spout in the form of two conjoined dogs heads. This object is 'Y' shaped in plan and circular in section. It is 124.08mm long and 14.64mm at the widest point, across a dog's head. The dogs are crudely rendered. They have transverse, incised lines running over their heads between their ears. The ears are square in plan, and are placed flush against the head and barely pass the top of the head. They are incised to represent the inner ear. The eyes are incised oval or 'lentoid' shapes, the nostrils are represented by two incised curved lines to either side of each dog's muzzle. The dogs mouths are open and are holding an integrally moulded barrel, that has a circular hole where the liquid would have poured out. The junction of the spout where it would have been soldered to a pitcher is a pointed oval in section. The object has an even dark green patina. Spouts of this kind are common in the 15th and 16th centuries. They almost always break at the point where they would have been soldered to a vessel. Double headed spouts are more unusual, but see Bailey, Detector Finds 3 for examples of single dog's head spouts.
