| Description |
English: Double gate on Bottlebush Down. This wide gate provides access to private farmland on Bottlebush Down from the B3081 road. The track beyond follows the course of the neolithic Dorset Cursus, a linear earthwork that once stretched for 9 kilometres across the undulating chalkland of Cranbourne Chase. Little of the cursus remains nowadays - it was identified by soil marks in aerial photos during the 20th century. Parts of the monument's parallel banks survive on the stretch between here and the hamlet of Pentridge. In the distance is Pentridge Hill, with the summit (Penbury Knoll) capped by coniferous trees. |
