Title
double-looped oval buckle
Description
English: Cast copper alloy double-loop or spectacle oval buckle frame which has a flat base and a convex profile. The strap bar is narrowed and flush with the rest of the frame. The pin is missing. There is a moulded fleur de lis on the outer edge of each loop. The sides of the frame are concave and also have a moulded single knop at either end of the strap bar. To the left of one of these knops there is a break in the body of the frame, leaving a gap. The buckle is 46 mm long and 23 mm wide and 2.8 mm in thickness. The bar within the frame is 14 mm long and 2.5 mm wide and 3 mm in thickness.
Whitehead (1996) illustrates a similar example on p.64, No.393, which he dates to c.1550-1650.
Read (1995) illustrates another example on p.112, No. 706, which he dates from the late 16th century to the early 17th century.
