dnot wish her to think that we cared solittle for it that we were not willing totake care of it, should you, Nancy? Why, no,^ said Nancy; but sheknows we care for it. Mrs. Greyson felt that something mustbe said which would assure the little girlthat the tasks were done not for the sakeof doing them, and to convince her that 138 DOROTHY DAINTY the home would not look the same if leftin disorder. I never saw your old home, Nancy/^she said, gently, but you have often toldme that you never did any of the littlethings which you now do to help me.Try to think, Nancy, if the old homelooked as cheerful and cosey as this onedoes. Nancy glanced hastily around the prettysitting room. Oh, no, indeed, she cried,it wasn^t anything like this. But if you went back there to live, you would never have to do any of thethings which you dislike to do here, saidMrs. Greyson. Oh, rd rather be here if I had to dotwice as many things to help you, criedNancy; and she began to wield the dusterwith furious zeal.
Text Appearing After Image:
Nancy saw Dorothys sunny face peeping- over the wall. HIDE THE THIMBLE 139 Nancy really had very little to do,—onlya few trifling tasks each morning, andthen she was free to play all day. Her dusting finished, Nancy ran outto gather a few bright blossoms for thedining room. Oh, Nancy, ^^ called a cheery voice, come over and play with us,^ and, look-ing up, Nancy saw Dorothys sunny facepeeping over the wall. In a minute,^ answered Nancy; • Illcome as soon as Ive put the flowers inwater. Nancy ran into the house, and, hastily plunging the stems of the blos-soms into a large glass bowl, which stoodupon the dining-room table, she turned toleave the room. Oh, dear! I didnt put any water inthat bowl, did I? No, I didnt, she said, thus answering herself. She took the 140 DOROTHY DAINTY bowl of flowers, and, running to the side-board, grasped the water pitcher, andtilting it, she sent a great stream of icewater into the bowl. Guess thatsenough,^ she said, settling the pitcherinto its place
