Summary
[edit]DescriptionDorchester South station geograph-3865810-by-Ben-Brooksbank.jpg |
English: Dorchester South station. 1991. View SE, towards Weymouth. This was originally the terminus of the LSWR (ex-Southampton & Dorchester) line, extended to Weymouth from Dorchester Junction, which is south of Dorchester GW (later 'West') station of the (broad-gauge, ex-Wilts., Somerset & Weymouth) line and of this 'South' station, the GWR providing an extra rail to allow standard-gauge LSWR trains to reach Weymouth by running powers. The LSWR built a sharp curve on the Down side here, but for over 100 years Up LSWR/SR/BR(SR) trains from Weymouth going to Bournemouth etc. had only an Up terminal line and had to reverse out again to proceed towards Bournemouth. Only in May 1970 was an Up platform built on the curve. The station was rebuilt in 11/86, in preparation for extension of electrification from Bournemouth early in 1988. |
