Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Doocot at Delgatie Castle In mediaeval times doos (pigeons) were encouraged to nest in artificial nestboxes inside doocots. They fed themselves in the surrounding countryside, and provided fresh meat in winter. Only landowners were allowed to keep doos, which seems a bit hard on the crofters and farmers whose fields were where the birds fed. There are various styles of doocot; this one is a beehive doocot. The protruding horizontal courses of stone were to prevent rats getting into the building and raiding the nestboxes.
