Description
English: Stone grave cross in the parish churchyard of St Michael and All Angels, Beetham, Cumbria.

Lieutenant Colonel Donald William Tench, HM 45th Regiment, (or the Nottinghamshire) Regiment of Foot, later to become (Nottingham and Sherwood Foresters) Born 1809 in Guernsey. He was the husband of Martha Georgina. In 1867 as Major he was living at 50 Wood Street, Woolwich, Kent, and in 1871 now married and promoted to Lt Col Royal Artillery, now at 26, Wood Street.
The Edinburgh Gazette dated 9th December 1831 WAR-OFFICE, December 2, 1831. 45th Ensign Donald William Tench to be Lieutenant, by purchase.
The London Gazette dated December 19, 1856 Captain Donald William Tench (Staff Officer of Pensioners), half-pay 15th Light Dragoons, to be Major. Dated 8th December, 1856.
The Edinburgh Gazette date April 14th 1868 Captain and Brevet-Major Donald William Tench, half-pay 15th Dragoons and Staff-Officer of Pensioners, to be Lieutenant-Colonel. Dated 29th March 1868.
The London Gazette 2nd February 1875. Half-Pay, Captain and Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Donald William Tench, from half pay, 15th Dragoons, and Staff Officer of Pensioners, to be Major. Dated 3rd February, 1875.
The London Gazette 9th March 1875.

Major and Brevet Lieutenant Colonel Donald William Tench half pay, late Staff Officer of Pensions, retires from Service, receiving the value of his Commission. Dated 13th February 1875.
