Summary
[edit]DescriptionDon Rhodes WAGR water wagon, 2012.JPG |
English: An ex-WAGR water wagon, at the Don Rhodes Mining and Transport Museum, Wilson Street, Port Hedland, Western Australia. The wagon was hauled by the WAGR G class steam locomotive on the Port Hedland–Marble Bar railway between its opening in 1911 and closure in 1951. The railway had been built partly to facilitate a better water supply to Port Hedland. At the Shaw River crossing, water tanks were built, and water from those tanks was carted to Port Hedland in water wagons such as this one. After the railway ceased full operations in 1951, water trains continued to operate from the Shaw Tanks to Port Hedland, until the completion of the pipeline from the Turner River in 1953.
