Summary

[edit]
Description
English: An ex-WAGR kibble and wagon, at the Don Rhodes Mining and Transport Museum, Wilson Street, Port Hedland, Western Australia.

In the 1950s, kibbles were used to load manganese ore onto ships berthed at the Port Hedland jetty. To load a ship, four trucks, each carrying 10 kibbles, were rostered to supply the jetty train. A mechanical shovel/loader, known as a navvy, was used to fill the kibbles at the manganese stockpile. Each kibble held between 1.5 and 2 tonnes of ore.

The loaded trucks were weighed, and driven to the jetty, where the kibbles were transferred to railway wagons and taken to the ship. The kibbles were then lifted by the ship's derricks, and emptied into the hold. Empty kibbles were put back on the train, returned to land, and transferred to the trucks to repeat the process. By this method, loading took place day and night, at the rate of 70 tonnes per hour.

The first load of manganese ore shipped from Port Hedland departed aboard the Fernbrook in 1953, after a 23-day-long loading process .
