Summary

[edit]
Description Now isn't that a gorgeous dragon head! Hangzhou, China is a place famous for dragon boat races. Well, Hong Kong is the place generally associated with dragon boat racing, but I've seen dragon boats in Luang Prabang as well, but Hangzhou is supposed to be the origin of this practice. (subject to confirmation- I'm still researching that bit). So after a nice boat ride on the boat in the Hangzhou Xixi Wetland Park with my friends Jane and Jeff, we have just got off the boat (no, not the dragon boat, but a regular boat for a ride on the lake). Up on the shore was this unusually long dragon boat kept on display. And this is the head of that long boat. My, isn't it gorgeous! This is one of the few dragons painted so colourfully in China. Most dragons and pagodas I've seen in the country far have been in their natural colours. Dragon heads carving is a traditional art and requires some skill, passed down from the generations. I wouldn't be surprised if fiberglass replaces wood in a few years and and when the new generation takes over. We are now in the Xixi Wetlands Reserve in Hangzhou, China and are heading towards the exit. Detailed notes about the reserve appear in previous captions, earlier in this album.
