Description North America's largest sugar refinery on the banks of the Mississippi in New Orleans. The plant owned by American Sugar Refining, Inc., took four years to construct and opened on May 17, 1909. It produces more than 2 billion pounds of all kinds of sugar products a year, about 19 percent of the US's cane sugar.
