Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Dominion Energy Ohio building at 1201 E. 55th Street in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States.

This was the site of the East Ohio Gas Works No. 2. Construction began on a Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) works here in 1940, and the plant opened in January 1941. It was the nation's first large experiment in storing LNG. The plant expanded in 1942. On October 20, 1944, one of the LNG tanks sprung a leak, and two massive explosions leveled most of the plant. It took 24 hours to put out the fire, which spread into the nearby neighborhood. More than 130 people died (many burned beyond recognition), and 79 homes and two nearby factories were destroyed.

In 1946, East Ohio Gas built a $650,000 motor vehicle maintenance shop on the site. Designed by the architectural firm of Wilbur Watson & Associates, this building is 145 feet deep and 250 feet wide. It has two-stories and a basement, and concrete ramps allow vehicles to access the upper floor and basement, where they may be repaired.
