Description

On 26 September 1907 New Zealand celebrated its first ‘Dominion Day’ holiday, held to mark its newly granted status as a Dominion of the British Empire. The day was marked throughout the country with a holiday for public servants, and a commemorative medal struck for school children. Some cities celebrated the occasion with fervour - in Auckland a military parade was watched by thousands of spectators; in Wellington the Parliament Buildings were illuminated with lights and the message ‘Advance New Zealand’. Other centres were not as enthusiastic however, and shops and non-government businesses mostly stayed open on the day. In the following years the day was observed with diminishing vigour until fading completely from popular consciousness. As nzhistory.net.nz notes, the demise of the day as a public celebration was likely the result of several reasons, one of which was the lack of a strong emotional attachment to the event itself of becoming a Dominion.

Pictured are tickets of entry and programmes of events from the Wellington celebrations of Dominion Day in 1910. These records come from the ‘Holidays’ record group from the Department of Internal Affairs, which include archives of Dominion Day celebrations from 1908-1910.
