Dolphin brooch with incised decoration
Description
English: Roman brooch; Incomplete cast copper alloy dolphin brooch dating to the 1st century. One wing missing. The remaining wing is a broad and slightly flattened cylindrical shape. It is decorated with an incised hatched band which runs diagonally from the inner side of the end of the wing towards the middle of the outer side of the wing, near the start of the bow. The bow is a simple, deeply curved dolphin shape which tapers gracefully to a point. It has a similar decorative band to the wing which runs along the length of the centre of the bow. There is no evidence of a foot. The catchplate and pin are missing. Length 39.2mm, width 22.9mm, thickness (at head of bow) 6.6mm, weight 10.64g
