Title
Dolphin brooch foot (plan)
Description
English: Fragment of a cast copper alloy Roman Colchester derivative, Dolphin brooch with just the lower bow, foot and part of the catchplate remaining and missing the main part of the bow, head, wings and pin. The fragment has the remains of worn zig-zag, leaf-like mouldings either side of a pair of central grooves running the length of the bow. The two grooves form the border either side of a moulded cabled pattern down the centre of the bow, which may have originally been enamelled, as on other examples recorded. The brooch looks like a worn version of a similar brooch found in Lanlivery which is a Dolphin-type brooch with pairs of leaf-like mouldings down each side of the bow. The leaf-like mouldings and central cabling are like examples of Dolphin and Polden Hill type brooches illustrated in Hattatt (2000) on pages 299-300, figs.158-159, nos.1518 & 380, which both date from the 1st century AD. But the closest local comparandum is a Dolphin-type brooch from the excavations at Carvossa, Probus, identified by Butcher in Carlyon, CAJ No.26, 1987, p.122, fig.7, no.19, and dated to the last quarter of the 1st century AD.
