Title
Dolphin brooch
Description
English: A slightly worn cast copper-alloy roman dolphin brooch. The hollow tubular wings conceal an incomplete hinge pin mechanism. The axis bar and copper-alloy pin are incomplete. The wings are undecorated. The humped bow tapers to a point, which has been bent slightly to one side at the terminal. There are three faint ribs on head of the bow and one centrally down the leg. The bow has three transverse flat slots for enamel, the first of which still contains red enamel. The other two slots are empty. The slightly damaged catchplate (length 19.4mm) is quite flat and is bent to one side. The complete length of the brooch is 50.3mm, the width is 30.5mm and the weight is 8.62g. A similar Dolphin brooch with the enamel decoration is in Hattatt (BOA, 1987, 96, No.893).
