Summary

[edit]
Description In the mid 19th century, the Ottoman sultan, who had so far lived with his family at the Topkapı Palace, decided to demolish the former Beşiktaş Palace on the Bosporus to make room for a new, grandiose palace with up-to-date luxury and style, that would become their main residence. In 13 years, the Dolmabahçe Palace, the largest in Turkey, was completed. It was home to six sultans (until 1922), and was used by Attatürk as summer residence (he died there in 1908). Its name means "filled-in graden", as it is built on a ground claimed to the sea, and is known for its over-the-top opulence. This picture shows one of the main gates of the palace.
