Summary
[edit]DescriptionDolmabahçe Palace, Istanbul (2252684143).jpg | The progressive decline of the Ottoman Empire brought an ever increasing influence of the European culture and styles, most notably during the Tanzimat period. This is reflected both in the architecture and decor of the new Dolmabahçe Palace that was was built to showcase the splendor of the Ottoman sultans in the second half of the 19th century. Architecturally, the Dolmabahçe Palace is an eclectic buildings that contains elements from the Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical styles, blended with traditional Ottoman architecture to create a new synthesis. From the point of view of the decoration, the Dolmabahçe Palace also differs enormously from the Topkapı Palace. Whereas the Topkapı Palace, which had been so far the main residence of the sultans in the city, uses mostly Iznik tiles and Ottoman carving for the decoration of the rooms, the Dolmabahçe palace is characterized by the use of gold, plaster, crystal and noble woods. |
