LXVIII.EOX. Kufus Johnson was a farmer. He lived about four milesfrom the town where he sold the produce he raised on hisplace, wheat, corn, vegetables, and fruits of various kinds.His apple orchard brought him considerable revenue.Johnson was an industrious farmer, but had a weaknessfor apple jack and whiskey, and every time he went totown, he got drunk. On one of his trips, when he hadtaken a load of apples, he indulged in so much liquid, thathe was incapable of guiding his team of two old muleshome. He was lucky, however, in having a dog thathelped him out in emergencies. When returning home, he IN FROSE AND RHYME. 137 always bad Kox get in the wagon and ride with him. Onthis particular journey back to the farm, Johnson wasjust able to get in. the wagon, and start the team home-ward. Eox sat on his haunches and forefeet on the floorbetween the seat on which Johnson rested his limber bodyand the dashboard. They had not gone far, when thewhiskey and apple jack Johnson had imbibed too
