Title |
Dog headed tap with part of handle. |
||
Description |
English: An incomplete, cast copper alloy, Medieval tap. The tap has a spout stylised as a dog's head, and a flat handle with the stylised outline of a cockeral. The half of the handle representing the cockeral's body is missing, along with most of the spigot which would of fitted into a wooden barrel.
The tap has an even, mid green patina. The dog's head spout has protruding ears, eye sockets, and a short section of neck. Where the neck meets the head, the spout turns downwards at an angle of 45 degrees. The collar where the handle is set into the spout is hexagonal on the outside and 14mm tall. This collar is 11.8 mm wide at the top, tapering to 10.0mm at the bottom. When the cockeral's tail is inline with the spout the tap is closed. The flat handle was broadly U shaped, with the rear arm representing a cockerals tail, and the missing front arm would of represented the cockeral's body and head. The tail is in an arc to start with but then the end sticks up straight. On one side of the handle, just above the collar, is part of an engraved symbol, part of which extended onto the missing section of handle. The tap is 47.6mm tall and 42.8mm long. The tap weighs 23.7 grams. The diameter of the spout at its opening is 5.7mm, and the thickness of the spout sides is 1.0mm. LEIC-4629C7 is similar. |
