Title |
Dog's head spout |
||
Description |
English: Cast copper alloy zoomorphic pouring spout in the form of a dog’s head with a barrel protruding from the animal’s mouth, probably of 15th or 16th century date. The object is subrectangular in plan and subcircular in section. The dog is crudely modelled with low brow, and square shaped upright ears, flat to the sides of its head, that barely rise above the level of its head. There do not appear to be any facial features such as eyes, though the object seems very worn and these may since have been worn away. The bottom of the neck of the dog curves away almost at a right angle, and extends into the portion of the object that was attached to a vessel. No evidence of attachment, such as solder, can be seen, which may suggest it was equally as likely to be the pourer for a leather bottle as well as a metal ewer etc. The length of the dog’s head and neck is 43.74mm, with an average width of 12.5mm. The portion of the object that bends to form the attachment piece is 48.6mm long , 14.28mm wide at the top and then tapers to a point. The spout weighs 45.45 grammes. Overall it has an even dark green patina, but does appear worn and ‘rubbed’. Information on decorative pouring spouts can be found in Bailey, detector Finds 3. |
