Celles-ci se rencontrentdans la partie la plus méridionale de la région et forment une couche plus ou moinsrégulière à la surface des roches anciennes. Le calcaires cristallins de ce districtont généralement une stucture grossière et sont plus ou moins impurs: ils renfermentdes silicates. Les roches groupées sous le nom de gneiss sont, sans doute, toutes dori-gine sédimentaire. Elles représentent parfois des modifications de couches sédimen-taires plus ou moins argileuses, tandis que dautres sont riches en quartz et semblentservir de transition aux quartzites. Associés au gneiss, souvent sans délimitation marquée, se trouvent des schistesbasiques de couleur foncée, groupés par Adam et Barlow sous le nom damphibolites.
