hich line the streets of many of our newer cities. Infact, throughout the Middle States it is almost impossible to finda perfect tree within the limits of our cities. A few elms, perhaps,have struggled to maturity and escaped the desecration of tlie treebutcher, but it is indeed a task to find untouched trees of othervarieties. For perfect specimens of our native trees it is necessaryto- go to- the country, where, in some neglected, open wood lot thetrees have had a full opportunity to grow as nature intended thatthey should. The observation of these facts early led the writer to a realiza-tion of the danger which threatened our trees, in the form of thatvandal par excellence, the professional tree trimmer. Attendant, as tree trimming almost invariably is, by serious ifnot fatal results, I have been interested in learning some of thereasons why intelligent property owners permitted their shadetrees to be butchered. Too often I find that the business man, unable to give the matter -45-

On a few occasions trees are lopped off because their owners areafraid of falling limbs—an unfounded fear, as I shall laterprove.
