English: Bahamian Minister of National Security Marvin Dames, U.S. Embassy in Nassau Chargé d'Affaires Stephanie Bowers, General Terrence O'Shaughnessy, Commander, U.S. Northern Command and Commander, U.S. Coast Guard 7th District, Rear Adm. Eric Jones conducted a press conference Sept. 6, 2019 in Nassau discussing the Hurricane Dorian response efforts in The Bahamas. Gen. O'Shaughnessy emphasized the Department of Defense's support of USAID and the Department of State in the relief efforts for The Bahamas. He noted that most U.S. forces ready to support are staging in Florida, and that the U.S. military's primary focus is working to enable the larger relief effort. In support of foreign disaster relief efforts in The Bahamas, the Secretary of Defense authorized U.S. Northern Command to provide transportation logistics for the movement of USAID and third party humanitarian commodities and personnel throughout the region and to conduct assessments of critical transportation nodes to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance and maximize the flow of disaster relief into the area. |
