Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Drawing of the Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience), Red Fort in Delhi showing a red canopy in the foreground, a horse and various figures. Inscribed on the front in Persian characters: 'Naqshah i anjuman i Diwan i Khas i qil'ah i Shahjahanabad' (Picture of the assembly of the Diwan-i Khas in the Fort of Shahjahanabad); on the back in English: '5. The Hall of Audience in the Fort of Delhi.' The Red Fort or Lal Qila, was constructed by Shah Jahan (r.1627-58) as part of his new city of Shahjahanabad. The octogonal-shaped fort complex is surrounded by high fortification walls of red sandstone which reach between 18-33 metres in height. The Hall of Private Audience is a single-storey building faced in white marble inlaid with coloured gemstones in floral designs. The roof of the building is flat, supported on a series of arched piers, with sloping eaves projecting from the parapet to provide additional shade for the interior. The hall was designed for small gatherings of courtiers, members of the royal family and visiting dignitaries and foreign ambassadors, held in the presence of the emperor. Other key buildings within the fort include the Hall of Public Audience or 'Diwan-i-Am' and the Pearl Mosque or 'Moti Masjid'.
