DescriptionDiving bell QE2 80.jpg | DIVERS AT WORK. Such are the exigencies of modern warfare that neither in the Army nor the Navy does (he service of earlh or sea suffice for the operations of our soldiers and sailors. While our soldiers survey the enemy's lines, or destroy his works, from their balloons far above the earth, our sailors are constantly compelled to dive into the depths of the element upon which they live. The picture shows a diving party from H.MS. Excellent at Portsmouth. One diver has just risen to the surface, another is descending. The work is not for a novice to undertake. Trying, and at the outset often painful, it requires an adequate apprenticeship; and to a strong physique the diver must add a dauntless courage which alone can enable him to do his work among the terrible scenes with which he is sometimes confronted in his wanderings on the ocean bed. | |||
