Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Sketch illustrating the principle of dive bombing. The dashed line is the flight path of the aircraft (that is, the extension of its longitudinal axis) while the continuous line is the parabolic trajectory of the fall of the bomb. In traditional bombing (top), the bomb's point of impact is influenced by many factors, including the aircraft's speed and altitude at the time of the release; therefore, without sophisticated aiming devices this technique generally inaccurate. In dive bombing, the bomb is falling almost exactly in front of the aircraft and the pilot has the point of impact almost exactly in his sight (more exactly, as the angle of the dive approaches -90°). After dropping the bomb, the pilot maneuvers to get back to a sufficient altitude. Since the fall of the bomb is only slightly affected by the speed and altitude of the aircraft at the time of dropping, dive bombing is generally very accurate.
