Col. Bill Leady, commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District, takes a closer look at a tainter gate for the new Folsom Dam auxiliary spillway Nov. 28, 2012, at the Oregon Iron Works’ Vancouver, Wash., facility. “Being [at the fabrication facility] was like being at a metal shop for the giants,” Leady said. Leady, and other Sacramento District staff, took a tour of the site to gauge the progress on 12 massive bulkhead and tainter gates, which will control the flow of water from Folsom Lake through the spillway’s control structure. The spillway project is a joint effort of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, and state and local partners to reduce flood risk throughout the Sacramento region. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2017. (U.S. Army photo by Jacqueline Steiner/Released) |
