Range.—North America, north to central British Columbia,southern Mackenzie, and the Gulf of St. Lawrence; thence souththrough the West Indies and Central America to Venezuela andPeru. NORTH AMERICAN RAILS AND THEIR ALLIES. 27 Breeding range.—The sora, or, as it is often called, the Carolina rail,breeds throughout northern United States and north to Grand MananIsland, N. B. (Osgood), Prince Edward Island (Bagster), Godbout,Que. (Comeau), Moose Factory, Ont. (Spreadborough), Fort Churchill.,Keewatin (Clarke), Fort Rae, Mackenzie (Baird, Brewer, and Ridg-way), Fort Simpson, Mackenzie (Preble), Cariboo District, B. C.(Brooks), and Victoria, B. C. (Rhoads). The species has also beennoted as a wanderer north to Nova Scotia (Willis), Newfoundland(Reeks), Harrington, Que., July, 1907 (Townsend), Sandwich Bay,
