A distrail splits the outer region of a stratocumulus cloud; remnants of contrail visible, Dortmund, June 2019.

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This distrail within the outer regions of a stratocumulus cloud was caused by the jet wake of a low-flying aeroplane. Seen from Aplerbeck, Dortmund, June 2019. The contrail, which is the primary turbulence zone caused by the jet engine, is discernable as a narrow, contorted white vortex just above the lower edge of the transparent wake approximately halfway from centre to top right.
Beobachtet in Aplerbeck, Dortmund in Juni 2019.

Additional Information

[edit]

en: Distrail within the outer regions of a stratocumulus cloud.

  • Image taken at location: Aplerbeck, Dortmund, Germany on June 21st, 2019.
  • Elevation of cloud approx. 2,000 metres.
  • Angle of view: approx. 20° from zenith.
  • Low-flying jet aeroplanes typically cross over on waiting loops before approaching either Dortmund, Münster, or Düsseldorf airport.
  • Due to the the quick response after formation, the high viewing angle, the moderately telescopic lens (135mm), and a quantum of good luck the high-resolution sensor (7952x5304 pixels) could capture not only the distrail in great detail (see Contrail#Distrails), but also a short section of the initial contrail (see active areas within image) before it disappeared behind the edge of the cloud seconds later.

  • Aufnahmeort: Dortmund-Aplerbeck, Deutschland, 21. Juni 2019.
