Photograph of a distant view of the Hopi Indian village of Oraibi on top of a rocky mesa, ca.1900-1901. Layered rocks form the base of the village at center. At the top stands the rock structures that house the Hopi Indian village of Oraibi.; "Village traced back to 1370. -- Washington, March 30 (AP) -- The oldest continuously inhabited community in the United States is Oraibi, an Indian village north of Winslow, Arizona -- The National Geographic Society said today that Oraibi was in existence in 1370 more than a century before the Spaniards reached the mainland of North America, and long before Columbus discovered the new world. The statement is based upon explorations made for the society by Dr. A.E. Douglas and Neil M. Judd." -- newspaper clipping
