| Description | Whitmonday in Disentis. There is not only the famous monastery to admire. Just 300 m west of the train station stands the parish church of Sogn Gions. A church here is first mentioned in 1267. But of that only the lower part of the steeple remains. Building their own parish church in the village was a drive for independence away from the imperialist monastery. The current church dates from the years 1640 to 1643. In 1667 the steeple was raised. The formerly Romanesque building was enlarged to become the largest baroque parish church in the canton of Graubünden. In 1799 the French imperial troops set a fire which partially destroyed the church. The last complete renovation was from 1973 to 1976. Switzerland, May 29, 2023. (1/4) |
