een an inverted uterus and a fibrouspolyp is this: that if the uterus is inverted, you cannotperceive the body of the uterus above the cervix, while if thetumour be a polyp, you can. The presence of the body of theuterus above the cervix is found out in two ways—first, bybimanual examination, you can get the uterus between thetwo hands; but if the uterus should be inclined backwards,you will press the uterus down and back, and the tension ofthe vaginal wall produced by the tumour in it may preventyou from feeling the uterus through the posterior wall. Ifyou cannot feel the uterus by bimanual vaginal examination,try bimanual rectal examination. The finger in the rectum 328 DISEASES OF WOMEN. can reach higher up than the finger in the vagina; and if thebody of the uterus be present above the cervix, you willscarcely fail to perceive it. If your finger in the rectum andhand on the abdomen meet above the cervix, and feel thecervix like a ring, into which the rectal finger can be pressed
