Arthritic muscular atrophy affects the muscles of hands, Arms Shoul- . • . . ders, Face and Legs. only in the vicinity of a joint which was previously diseased. Etiology.—Very little is known of the causes of this affection. Exposureto cold, trauma, exertion, have been reported as usual causes. Twocases came recently under my observation in one of which carrying dailylarge cakes of ice in the left hand for a period of three months was appar-ently the only accountable cause for the beginning of the atrophy in thesame hand. The other patient sustained a blow with an iron bar overhis shoulder. There was no erosion or any other apparent lesion. Shortlyafterwaids he noticed that he could not thread a needle and had difficulty

Infectious diseases, intoxications, syphilis, have been also mentionedas causative factors. An attack of acute anterior poliomyelitis in child-hood may become later in life the point of departure of progressivemuscular atrophy (Figs. 102, 103). The disease usually develops in middle life, more frequently in men thanin women. In a few isolated cases it has been observed in several mem-bers of the same family (Ormerod, Holmes, Gee).
