Fig. 386.—Sagittal section of the thorax. Illustrates how little room for expansion thereis for the heart between the vertebral column, and the anterior thoracic wall. DISEASES OF THE MYOCARDIUM 673 Instances have been recorded in which the heart weighed 1700 and 2500grams respectively. In men the weight of the heart to the whole body isabout 1 to 170; in women it is 1 to 183. Hypertrophy may affect one chamber only, but this is unusual. Thechamber to be first affected is that one which first is subjected to an un-usual amount of work. Generally speaking the left ventricle is the cham-ber in which the hypertrophy is most marked even when other portions ofthe heart are involved also (see Fig. 193). Two forms of hypertrophy are recognized: (1) simple enlargement, without change in the size of the cavities; and (2) hypertrophy plus dila-tation of the cavities, sometimes spoken of as eccentric enlargement.Figs. 383, 384, and 385 show very well the change from simple hyper-trophy to dilat
