The majority of cases begin in early child- DISEASES OF THE BONES AND MUSCLES 2/7 hood; frequently several children in a family being af-fected. Symptoms.—The onset is insidious; generally theredevelops slowly an increasing weakness in the lowerextremities in children previously normal. The pecuHar and very characteristic manner of risingfrom the floor is the most prominent symptom. Thechild first pushes itself up until it is standing on its feetand hands, then it places first one, then the other handon its knees and again pushes itself into the erect posturefrom this position. With this weakness there is noticeda symmetric increase in the size of certain muscles, es-pecially the calves. This peculiarity gives the name tothe type.
