V/HEAT - Nematode 208 part of the state and is about midway between the infestation in V/ilkes County, North Carolina, and Jackson County, Georgia- Specimens v/ere received from Clyde, Haywood County, Morth Carolina, by A. C. Martin of the Colle^je of Agriculture at Raleigh on September 27 and subinitted by him to the Plant Disease Jurvey v/here they were received October 1» The sample submitted contained \G% nematode galls, which is a high percentage for this disease. Black chaff caused by Bacterium translucens undulosum 5, <5c R. The distribution of black chaff to date according to Plant Disease Survey reports is indicated on the accompanying map.

In 1922 black ch:,ff was reported from Oklahoma, northwestern Arkansas, isconsin, lov/a, I^orth Dakota (Cass and Pierce Counties infested, although others ght have been and not reported ^ V/eniger), eastern oouth Dakota (no data on dis- tribution west of (Missouri) River - Ivans), and southern Kansas. The disfeaseuwas".v;idespread in Oklahoma, extending south'.vestward from the north-central part, where it was worst, according to Stratton, and causing severe osses in some fields- Gtratton believes that the v.^et spring may have been re- sponsible for the large amount of black chaff in the state. Of interest in this connection is MelcHers' statement (July I5) that black chaff was found in southern Kansas v/here most of the rainfall of the state occurred. Dates when the disease v/as first recorded are; June 3» ^-alters, Oklahoma; June, Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Brookings, South Dakota; July iG, Rugby, North Dakota.
