Timeless Beauty - The Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque of 1541 CE, a Must-Visit in Present-Day New Delhi

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Qila-i-Kuhna Mosque, constructed by Sher Shah in 1541, stands as a remarkable example of pre-Mughal architecture. It represents an early adoption of the pointed arch in the region, evident in its five doorways with 'true' horseshoe-shaped arches. Originally designed as a Jami Mosque or Friday mosque for the Sultan and his courtiers, this single-aisled mosque features a prayer hall measuring 51.20 meters by 14.90 meters. Its western wall boasts five elegant arched prayer niches or mihrabs.

The mosque's exquisite design incorporates marble in varying shades of red, white, and slate for the calligraphic inscriptions on the central iwan, signifying a transition from Lodhi to Mughal architectural influences. In the past, the courtyard housed a shallow tank with a fountain. Today, it stands as the best-preserved structure within Purana Qila.

Situated near the Pragati Maidan exhibition ground, the mosque is separated from the Dhyanchand Stadium by Mathura Road, Delhi. This iconic location has also served as the backdrop for numerous movies, including 'Veer-Zaara' and 'Love Aaj Kal,' among others.
