Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Discarding the winter woollies. Soays are one of a small number of primitive sheep breeds that shed their fleece naturally so that no shearing is required. The sheep, originating from the remote island of St Kilda (also known as Hirta) > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/738155 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/742533 - https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/184384 - have to be caught in time before they are about to shed their coat, when processing of their wool is intended. The fleece is then plucked by hand (rooed). The wether depicted here is in the process of shedding its fleece, which has become detached and will come off when the animal rubs against a tree or another object; in this stage it can easily be plucked without causing the animal any discomfort. See also > 829560. Soays are primitive sheep and very similar in appearance to the mouflon seen wild in Corsica, Sardinia and Cyprus; they are small, fine-boned animals varying in colour from tan to dark brown, with short tails and a fleece that is shed naturally. Soay sheep are classified as "vulnerable" on the RBST survival watch list.
