| Description |
English: The sauropod Diplodocus (“double beam”) could grow up to 27 m in length and was distinguished by the special lightweight design. The vertebrae are full of large hollow spaces containing air sacks branching off from the breathing system as with birds today. These air sacks run through almost the entire spine to the base of the tail. At the same time the spine was stabilized by slats of bone. The result was maximum load-bearing capacity with as little weight as possible. According to biomechanical calculations, this animal’s centre of gravity was located far back, just before the pelvis. This is why they were probably able to stand upright on their hind legs to eat from high up in the treetops, using their tails for additional support (the “tripod” stance).
Deutsch: Der Sauropode Diplodocus (Doppelbalken) konnte bis zu 27 m lang werden und zeichnet sich durch eine besondere Leichtbauweise aus. Die Wirbelknochen sind mit großen Hohlräumen durchsetzt. In diesen Hohlräumen befanden sich wie bei heutigen Vögeln Luftsäcke, die vom Atmungssystem abzweigten. Sie durchziehen die gesamte Wirbelsäule bis zur Basis des Schwanzes. Gleichzeitig sich sind die Wirbel durch stabilisierende Knochenleistungen sehr belastbar. Damit war die Wirbelsäule von Diplodocus auf maximale Tragkraft bei möglichst geringem Gewicht optimiert. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Tiere lag nach biomechanischen Berechnungen weit hinten kurz vor dem Becken. Deshalb konnten sie sich wohl auch auf ihre Hinterbeine aufrichten um weit oben in den Baumwipfeln zu fressen. Da bei könnte der Schwanz als zusätzliche Stütze gedient haben („Tripod-Stellung“). |
