Copious ripe fruit of Diospyros lycioides subsp. guerkei during late summer

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Ripening, edible, red fruit of Diospyros lycioides subsp. guerkei during mid February (late summer) in the Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve, where all of this fairly numerous plant species fruit at the same time. The fruit have a pleasant sweet taste, and each contains a few large, smooth black seeds. Though some plants bear orange fruit, while the fruit of others mature to red, the two types appear to belong to the same subspecies, judging by their leaf venation. The plants in general appear to be more numerous in the upper, more rocky section of the reserve, than the lower-lying floodplain. Those growing on the upper sundrenched slopes bear abundant fruit.
